The Altona-Gretna section of the Trans Canada Trail (also known as The Great Trail) is part of a larger network that spans across Canada, connecting communities through scenic pathways. This section is primarily a recreational trail that offers opportunities for walking, biking, and hiking. Within the Town of Altona, the trail joins up with the community trail system, which has asphalt trails and benches for rest stops. From Altona to the Village of Gretna, the trail follows an abandoned rail line south, then continues east for about 12 km before rejoining the Boundary Commission Trail along the border and linking up with the next municipality. The majority of the Altona-Gretna section of the Trans Canada Trail is located within the boundaries of the Municipality of Rhineland.

Trans Canada Trail Tree Project
Plans are underway to plant approximately 900 trees along the trail connecting Gretna and Altona. This project, designed in collaboration with Morden Nurseries, aims to enhance the natural beauty and environmental sustainability of the area. The Trans Canada Trail Committee has applied for various grants and funding sources to minimize the costs. The trees will be planted strategically along the trail, ensuring they remain well within the property boundaries while complementing the existing pathway.
